The top lifts off with the removal of four screws to allow yearly cleaning. The "Crows Nest" has screened venting to provide additional ventilation.

I ordered this as a replacement, hoping that it would be solid enough to last through a couple more decades at least but anxious that it would seem fragile. I had no reason to fear. It's no flimsy balsa-wood item; it's nearly 28 pounds of well-crafted wood. This is a large, solid, very attractive piece that certainly will be used for housing birds--it's not simply an ornamental piece. But it IS ornamental, too--it will be a real feature in the garden, an unusual, attractive, sturdy and functional item. I love it and can't wait to get it in place.
