By KCroto
I purchased this spreader about 1 month ago. I had a plastic Scott broadcast spreader previous to this that lasted 3 years. I was looking for something that would not corrode and handle a full bag of fertilizer, push easily and move the spinner up so that it spreads better on a slope and in taller grass.
I think that the Spyker 20 with the SS hopper is 90% of the way there. What failed on the last spreader was the axle and drive. The steel tube axle corroded at the bushing, probably because it was hard to wash that area of fertilizer. The Spyker has a steel tube for an axle as well but passes through a shallow hole in the frame so keeping it clean should be much easier.
The hopper is pretty tall and narrow which makes it a bit unstable when full on a side slope but its not unbearable. And it will hold a 40 lb bag of 10-10-10, but its heaped.
I like the bigger tires for pushing over rough ground.
What makes the pushing difficult is the ht of the handle and the back legs that support it when unattended. I need to keep the handle bar as low as I can at my ht of 5-8, but the legs prevent you from tilting it back where its comfortable to push. In time I will bend the legs up a few degrees. Tilting it back makes it easier to spread the fertilizer up higher in wild flower sections as well.
The spreading rate adjustment is pretty old school but works very well. Same for shutting the gate to the spinner, its robust but not at your finger tips. Mine bound when I first got it out of the box. I lubed the slide gate and it worked well. Not sure if it will collect solids on the lub and bind or not. There is no deflector to adjust on the fly so that it spreads only to one side but there is nothing to fail either.
I would have liked the bigger completely stainless spreader but could not justify the added cost.
If the spreader fails with in a year you can be sure I will update the review.
